I built a small desk for my son out of mahogany and I was trying to match up the quality of the wood with a nice finish. I tried brushing an oil-based stain, followed by multiple coats of lacquer, but I was never satisfied with how the finish looked or how uneven the brush marks were.I read about using spray guns in various finishing books, but I was afraid of how much more involved spraying is compared to brushing. Living in California though has its advantages, one of them being that most of the time it's sunny outside. I realized I can build a setup a small cage outside, with a frame built from 2x4s and use plastic sheets as walls. With such a cage using a spray gun became something a lot easier to handle, since you don't have to worry about creating a mess around the spray area or having to install large fans to remove toxic and potentially combustible fumes.
Based on reviews at Amazon and on the web, I decided to go with the Fuji system, but instead of getting the system with the regular spray gun, I chose the gravity gun. Big mistake! Fuji's gravity gun, at least the one I got, could not get the top tight enough so the stain would not flow outside of the cup.
Customer service was top notch. I sent them an email and got a reply within the next day. They sent me a gun using a regular cup, like the one in this system. I was told that I'd also receive a tested gravity gun, but that never happened. The regular gun performed wonderfully, no overflows whatsoever. The lid closes extremely secure and it uses a gasket, as well as a diaphragm under pressure to keep the liquid in the cup from flowing on the outside.
Looking at the design of the gravity gun, it only has the gasket, with no diaphragm. You use your hand to tighten the lid, but that's not sufficient to secure it tight enough so that stain doesn't flow out under pressure. I'd say unless Fuji changes the design of the gravity cup, just stick with the regular gun found in this system. It's design is proven and just works.
The air compressor is relatively quiet. I haven't tried the non-Gold systems, so I don't know how noisy their turbine is. In practice, when I spray the turbine stays about 20ft from where I am, so noise is not that much of a problem. The turbine pushes hot air, so metal components on the turbine can be hot. I've had the turbine run on and off for more than an hour though, with no problems whatsoever. The air pressure and volume are constant, I didn't see any problems.
The spray gun is non-bleed: there is no air coming out of it when you don't spray. This is a very nice feature, since it allows you to concentrate on the actual spraying procedure rather than constantly hearing a high pitched noise very close to you.
I suggest getting the Fuji 2049F 6-Foot Hose, it's a lot lighter than the hose than comes with the system. It makes spraying large horizontal surfaces (like desks) a lot easier since you don't have to lift and hold the heavier hose for long periods of time.

Product is easy to handle, in hindsight, would have gotten the spray gun with the attachment on top but it is quiet with very little over spray so easy to use indoors. Would definitely purchase again and look forward to refinishing furniture.Want Fuji 3004-XPC Q4 Gold HVLP Spray System Discount?
I used it to finish guitars with water based finish (I got the #3 needle).Easy to use, easy to clean, and great results.
Noise, what noise?
Very happy with it.Superior results with a broad range of settings on the gun. After using an airless, it's almost surprising how simple this system is to set up and get spraying!
