SPT WA-9020E 9,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control

I have central air, but my bedroom upstairs is usually 5-10 degrees warmer than the other bedrooms (vaulted ceiling). This product works perfectly even though the room is much larger than 250sq ft. This portable AC only costs 50 cents a day to run, considerably less than running the central air. It's quieter than I expected and the air is very cold. The only thing I don't like is the instruction manual just not enough info. The exhaust hose must be mounted properly to the outside through a window. All portable AC units create a vacuum in the room and if the exhaust hose is not practically air tight, more warm air from outside will come in than cold air blowing out. I have had it for a week now and it has yet to need the water reservoir emptied.

This item is not worth it. It takes hours to cool down my 100 sq ft room. I have a 5,000 btu window unit that kicks butt compared to this one. Also, not convenient at all. You need to place a drip pan underneath to catch the water and it only allows a 1" space at the base. I had to build a 4" platform to lift the unit high enough to sit a basin at the bottom to catch all the drip without having to empty it every 1 1/2 hours.

this air conditioner has one filter which is easily removed for cleaning purposes, but the intake filter is completely hidden and cleaning it entails disassembling the unit, removing the case, just to access the filters. What a nightmare.

This 9000BTU AC is supposed to cool a 250 square foot room, so I thought it'd be more than enough for my 190 square foot bedroom. When I turned it on, I was sure it would make things cool pretty quickly, because it was very loud. . . my wife and I called it the "jet engine" during the brief time before we sent it back. Instead it was only able to cool the room by about 3-4 degrees, even when I let it run all night. I tried it for three nights before returning it, and one morning when I woke up, it was actually cooler outside the house than it was in the bedroom where the AC had been running full blast for about 12 hours. Pathetic!

I replaced this unit with a 6000 BTU window unit by Frigidaire. Even though the Frigidaire is only 2/3 the BTU rating, it makes less than half as much noise and was able to cool my fairly small bedroom from 100+ and humid (we're in the middle of a major heat wave in the Northeast right now) to about 72 degrees in about 90 minutes. Needless to say, the 6000BTU replacement will cost a lot less to run as well. . .

Also, I know some people don't care about this kind of thing, but this Sunpentown AC is just incredibly ugly. From the photo I wasn't really sure if it would look cool and futuristic in person or clunky and overbuilt. Guess what. . . it's the latter! It just looks junky and designed by a twelve-year-old who was trying to draw a Camaro instead of a piece of furniture that's supposed to look fairly decent in your house. Most appallingly, and although it doesn't look so bad in the small photo online, that beige insert for the louvers looks like it came from some twenty-year-old piece of office equipment (remember when everything was the same hideous beige?) and it's totally out of place with the silver/gray plastic used everywhere else.

I had a portable AC by Maytag that lasted about 7 years and worked very well, but this Sunpentown I bought to replace it is a terrible failure in all respects: ugly, the loudest air conditioner I've heard since I was a kid in the 1980s, and it doesn't cool worth a damn.

The only nice thing about the entire experience is that I bought it from Amazon, so it was incredibly easy to return! Thanks, Amazon, for being so freaking awesome. . .

In April 2011, I purchased a Sunpentown (SPT) air conditioner for $450. I ended up not using it last summer and stored it, unopened in its box, until a month ago. Right out of the box, it didn't work. After trading emails with a customer service representative James who after 3 rounds of email told me that it doesn't matter that the product was defective out of the box. I asked to speak with a manager and received a call from Mike, who told me that the product is out of warranty so there is nothing they can do, that it's not worth repairing a window unit and that I should either "junk it or sell it for scraps." I asked him if Sunpentown really has no problem manufacturing and selling such shoddy products and he said "It's been a year lady. Nothing I can do." Sunpentown makes bad products that don't work. Sunpentown is unwilling to stand by its products. My recommendation is for you to save your money and purchase another product, one made by a company who has integrity.

The price was right. I got a set of 3 for 13 bucks, shipped. They look and work fine. The only drawback are plastic internals. Who knows maybe it's NASA Space Plastic, but I guess thats the differance between 13 bucks for a set of 3, and 20 bucks for 1. The package says they're Made In Taiwan. They Lock and work fine. I'm happy with them.

Danby Premiere DPAC11010 Portable Air Conditioner

We bought this 11,000 BTU Danby August 2010 when our downstairs central a/c unit failed. We intended to use it as a temporary solution for a few days until our central air unit could be replaced, but we were astounded at how well it cooled so decided to hold off on spending the $4000-$7000 replacement cost.

While I'm writing this, it's 101 degrees outside in San Antonio TX, but inside our 648 sq ft open living room/kitchen area it's only 79! Current air temp being output by the Danby is 57 degrees. Last August we had temps of 105 and higher, and this unit was able to keep us cool downstairs, although the compressor was running almost continuously to keep up. And when the compressor does shut off, the fan continues to run and circulate the air there is no "auto fan" setting, so it doesn't shut off or turn on when the compressor does. Apparently this is common among many portable a/c units from what I've read.

One thing I've noticed on the temperature settings if we set the inside temp to be 78, the compressor will continue running for a long time even after the room temp cools to 76, perhaps stopping when the temp drops to 75. Likewise, the compressor will remain stopped even when room temp rises to 80, perhaps kicking back on when temp reaches 81. So there's a spread of at least 4 and perhaps 6 degrees between what you set the room temp ie. your actual room temp will vary from 2-3 degrees cooler to 2-3 degrees warmer than what you set.

This is a dual-hose ventilation system (some portable air conditionesr are one hose), and it was very easy to set up the included window kit only took about 30 minutes to get the unit unpacked and running. The window kit works with windows which open up and down, and with those which slide sideways.

It's a self-evaporating unit, so that most condensate from the cooling process evaporates instead of collecting in a reservoir and this appears to work as designed we've opened the bottom drain plug occasionally to check and never had any water drain out.

Overall, we've been extremely pleased with the Danby, and it saved us from making a huge and immediate unplanned expenditure for A/C repairs. We're now able to take our time, shop for the best deal, and replace our central a/c unit at our convenience.

We used this all summer long in our large master bedroom. When we first got it I thought it would take a very long time to cool but it surprised me when we felt a noticeable change in temperature in under 20 minutes. An hour later the room was at the temperature we wanted and we were loving this unit. Then we realized that my husband installed it incorrectly and there was a small gap that was still letting in the hot heat from outside. When we filled the gap it got even cooler faster. Over time we had it nicely setup where we just switched it on and got the room cooled down fast. Does the job, we were happy all summer long...

The folks at Danby apparently never heard of Steve Jobs.

The user interface and usability is horrible and the

manual is even worse. Descriptions of many features are

missing from the manual.

I purchased this air conditioner to cool a small server

room at my school.

This air conditioner never turns off. When the room temperature

goes below the thermostat setting, the compressor turns off

but the fan keeps running. Depending on the fan speed you select,

this will consume 50, 60, or 90 watts all the time.

The next ridiculous feature is the Auto-timer. I expected this

to be a time of day timer but instead it is a on or off duration

timer. Default setting on power-up is 8 hours for on and for off.

This means that when the air conditioner turns on, it will stay

on for 8 hours regardless of how cold the room is. My server room

got down to 60 degrees due to this feature. The manual does not

say how to turn this off but tech support told me I could set the

timer to be 0 hours and then the autotimer mode would be unset.

If I lose power, I'm back to the ridiculous mode of 8 hours of

continuous on -no non-volatile memory in this device. Finally,

there is no way to review your settings. If I'm in timer mode, and

switch to another mode, my timer setting of zero automatically

gets reset to 8 hours. This means that I can't put this air

conditioner on an external programmable timer because, power

cycling will reset the auto-timer. And, of course, the temperature

setting would be reset.

The manual says nothing about how to connect up the intake air and

how it is split. Turns out that the intake air gets split to the

cool conditioned air and the hot exhaust port. This means that if

the exhaust goes outside the room but the intake remains inside the

room, the room will get depressurized. If the intake and exhaust

are connected to the outside, then the room will become pressurized.

This pressurization/depressurization could be a potential health

hazard if there is a combustion source in the room. This isn't really

a big deal but it should be discussed in the manual. I currently have

it connected with intake coming from the room and exhaust (hot air)

going out.

I'm not using the window kit but the intake and exhaust hose dimensions

are incompatible with any standard duct-work. It is very close to 5"

duct but is not quite compatible with anything I can get at my local

hardware store.

There is no way to program the range of temperatures (the hysteresis)

of the thermostat.

The manual refers to a standby mode but there is no light to indicate

that the unit is in standby. I just thought it was off until I called

customer support. This is important because that is how I program the

auto-off setting of the stupid auto-timer.

The air conditioner seems to work fine when in cooling mode. I've

had it for only 3 weeks so I can't say anything about the reliability

of the device.

Because of the usability and lack of non-volatile memory, I definitely

would not purchase this device again.

The pressure switch on my 6hp 60 gallon compressor stopped working so I started looking for a replacement. This one looked exactly like my defective switch in the description so I bought it. I wasn't disappointed. Works like a charm. It even allowed me to set the cutoff limit much higher than my old one. I have had my Air-mate for almost 12 years. It was made by EMGLO and I have used it to finish out over 30 residential homes and eight commercial properties in the lower 48.

I bought a used rental unit from my job 4 1/2 years ago and it has been great. It will run an impact, die grinder, drill, cutoff tool and more. It does need time to recover so it will not efficiently run them continuous. It is great for inflating tires and other small jobs and is capable of other larger jobs. Overall the unit is over 11 years old and I have had to put a capacitor and power switch on it an no other problems. Good for the novice or the professional. Also is small enough to provide mobile air power which is a plus.

I just bought a used AirMate two tank 4gal for $75.00 (it is the 1.5 HP, not the 1.1) and feel redeemed after spending $125.00 (to much money) on a used Dewalt/Emglo One 4-1/2gal tank unit that blows a little oil.

In comparing the two to each other, I see no difference in motor or compressors and the only difference is in the one or two tank configuration and one compared to two line hook ups. As stated on some reviews of the one tank version, it has problems with pressure valve adjusting (sticking or not working) as does the old unit I bought.

All in all, if I was to have a choice between the one or two tank versions new, I would buy the

two tank version hands down. I don't know what went wrong with the one tank configuration, but it could be the extra money they had to spend on dual hook ups; I just don't know, but this is the configuration that is supposed to be the hot shot go to construction compressor. NOT

Also, the cheapest place I could find for the pump rebuild kit was Jacks Small Engines at about

2/3's what anyone else is asking, but found them after I had made the purchase; Figures!

I've owned this model Air Compressor before. It is tops.

Not so sure about the service. For some reason two were shipped, of course I only needed one. But Amazon "sold" the sale to King Tool, so Amazon's famous return policy did not apply. After testy exchanges with Took King I ended up keeping both compressors and bartering one to a friend.

In the future, I'll buy larger ticket items where I can carry them out of the store
