I was quoted a price of almost $300 to replace my condenser fan motor. For a fraction of that price, this motor matched the specs perfectly, except that this one has ball bearings at each end to ensure even longer life. It was easy to install, I think it took me a couple of hours. I had to trim the shaft and I cut the mounting studs a little shorter. It seems to be a quality part, on par with the original or even better. Mine didn't come with any instructions, so you will need to know a little about wiring a motor. I was able to find specific information online for connecting the included capacitor, as my unit has a combined type of capacitor.

I ordered this motor to replace an OEM unit that cost over $200 without the capacitor or shipping. For about $50, I got the motor, capacitor, and shipping.

This is a 4-wire motor, so if you are replacing a 3-wire unit, you'll have to take care to wire it properly. There are pointers to be found on the Internet if you know an electrician or technician, you might ask for a little advice.

Also, the motor can be wired to run forward or reverse with a pair of jumper wires mine had to be swapped to rotate the fan properly (pulling air out of the condenser unit).

Another issue is that the studs holding the body together are very long. Once I tested operation of the motor, I removed each screw to trim about 1" so that I could move the fan blade as high as possible. The shaft is about 6" long, but I did not trim the excess from it.

Finally, the wires from the motor are only about 18" long. That may not be long enough for some applications. The motor I removed had about 3' of wires. Be sure to use accepted methods if the wires have to be lengthened.

I'm a handy guy, so the extra work to install this motor was worth the savings. If you have to hire an electrician or AC tech to install the motor, it may not save too much. This one's been installed for about a month and is working great.

At the time of this review the listing details say that capacitor comes with it. Some people did not get the capacitor so immediately after making purchase I sent seller message requesting they include capacitor. They replied fast and polite and said Amazon had not informed them of change to listing details. I got motor fast and capacitor the next day as they were shipped separately (due to shipping origins being different I believe).

I was replacing a motor with a 3 prong capacitor (it is called a dual capacitor not to be confused with 2 pole as that is different aspect of capacitor) and the one that comes with this is a 2 prong. Most of the few motors that include a capacitor are a 2 prong capacitor. IF you are replacing a motor that has 3 prong (dual) capacitor with a motor that is 2 prong and the original capacitor is ok you simply leave original connected to everything except motor you are removing. Generally this will be a wire to compressor and a power wire. Then mount new capacitor and connect new motor to that one. A bad capacitor will generally look bad by having a bulge on either end of the cylinder.

Any time you replace the motor you should clean or replace the contactor. They are pretty cheap on Amazon being around ten bucks and usually you can get them same day locally for about 3 times that. Plan ahead and save some money with Amazon. For the price it is worth just getting new but in a pinch you can clean them up (meaning to clean contacts).

Bad capacitors and or contactors can be cause of fan motor failure but also many times it is simply just a bearing failure in motor too. But for less (often much less) than $30 you can replace both at same time if you order on Amazon. No I don't work for Amazon, lol. Just hope to save someone the problem of getting motor and then wishing they had ordered capacitor and contactor.

KTool was seller when I bought this motor and they are EXCELLENT. (just in case seller changes since I wrote this).

About 7 weeks later with c/a running almost every day and still quiet, smooth, and running perfect.

After reading the description and receiving the Fasco 1/4 HP motor part, a key component to make it work was not included. The 5 MFD Capacitor was not only missing but the shipping box says that it is optional and to order separatley. Amazon Description stated that it was included and never mentions ordering it separately. The product cannot work without it either. Sent an email and received a reply from CSH. CSH will be sending the part out and apologized for the inconvenience. Really thought I was going to have a hard time getting the needed piece. Kudos and Thank you.

The advantage to this Goodyear hose is that it is made out of industrial grade rubber instead of vinyl. What that means is that when you are using it instead of being stiff like vinyl it remains soft and flexible, so it lays flat on the floor. This is especially a problem in colder temperatures. It's great for coiling as well, it doesn't fight you.

The real frustration of using a vinyl hose is that it can stand up while moving across the floor, high enough to snag on things, or even pull something onto the floor. The hose is in a coil, then instead of simply uncoiling, the vinyl has a memory and wants to look more like hoops moving over the floor.

This hose comes in 3/8" which is the most popular size. The 1/4" hoses restrict air flow, which is especially important over a 50 foot run.

All in all highly recommended. The advantages are worth it even if it was twice the price.

Having used just about every type of air hose on the market, I can say the yellow Goodyear hose is second to none. It is very durable and stands up to the wear and tear of jobsite use. The coupler ends maintain excellent wear and far outlast other less durable hoses.

I bought this air hose under the impression it was a genuine goodyear air hose. It's not; it's a knockoff. The hose may or may not work fine, but it's not a goodyear hose. This is a genuine goodyear air hose. This was confirmed by the manufacturer of the real hoses; see hobbler's 1 star review and check the comments.

I didn't suspect much until I got the hose and noticed a couple of things. Though it seems to be hit or miss, the fittings on mine were mis-threaded as well. I tried to attach this hose to a hose reel and the fitting was very difficult to thread and only went on a few turns before not being able to go any further, even with a wrench. Also, the hose itself did NOT have the Mit diamond trademark signifying a genuine goodyear hose, and the goodyear markings that are there were put on sloppily and were starting to rub off.

Like I said, the hose may or may not work fine; I couldn't get mine threaded to even try it so 1 star. Others seem happy with it, and that's great, but I don't like to be duped. Don't sell me a harbor freight hose at goodyear prices. The genuine goodyear hose is only eight bucks more so I bought one of those and this one is en router back to amazon for a refund.

Amazon needs to get on the ball with these counterfeit items. I had a similar experience with a belkin USB cable, where it was supposed to be belkin, yet the cable was absolute garbage, extremely generic and anorexicly thin.

A cheap airhose (made from PVC, usually) is a pain. They stay coiled when you uncoil them, and stay straight when you coil them. A high quality rubber hose makes a huge difference. It sounds trivial, but it really makes managing hoses easier. When I'm in the shop, or out on a job I want to be able to run the hose out quickly, and coil it neatly when I'm done. A high quality rubber hose like this one makes it easy.

My Goodyear hoses have been in service for a long time and are tough enough to last for many more years.

I also appriaciate the fact that it's made in the USA.

One extra tip lay out your hose, then connect it to the tank. If you connect it to the tank when it's coiled, it'll fill with air and be harder to uncoil.

I recently puchased one of these 50' hoses for my new DeWalt twin tank air compressor. This is by far the best 50' hose on the market today without question. It remains totally flexible in cold temperatures unlike those vinyl coiled hoses on the market. It also lays flat when in use and does not coil up in places. You don't have to worry about tripping over this hose. The couplings at each end of the hose are very high quality and the yellow color is very noticeable to keep others from snagging the hose and tripping on it. The 50' lenght is perfect to allow you to move about freely and not relocate your compressor often. This is a great product and the price is right. Get one of these. You will be glad you did.

I have had this compressor for a little over a year now and it seams to operate fine. The instructions for installation are in my opinion vague. If you have never installed a big machine take your time. It is quite top heavy and you will need 2 people to manuver it around. I put isolation feet at the mounting legs and it does help considerably with vibration isolation. A booklet should be included with the compressor showing different airline hookups and hardware required. Overall a decent machine.

Ingersoll Rand Air Compressors are not what they used to be. I purchased this compressor, brand new 11 months ago for home use (April 2011). It powers a tire machine, and a few air tools for approx. 8 hours use per month. After 40 hours, the valves went in the first stage head. After 11 months, the pressure switch went, and the oil started leaking from two head bolts on the first stage head. If I would have known Ingersoll Rand Air Compressors had this poor of quality, I would have purchased something else.

There is a pattern. The packaging is not well done. The top plastic shroud came cracked and broken. OK, I could live with that. I assembled it, and ran it for the 10 or 15 minutes break-in period stated in the instruction manual. When I unpluged it after that the power switch gave out a big puff of smoke. The contacts had literally had melted the plastic relay switch. I called the manufacturer who said thed would send out a new switch. A week and a half later no switch. Meanwhile I found a better compressor at a lower price. Amazon was great about the return (it was about 30 days). Funny thing: About 6 weeks after I called the manufacturer I got the switch in the mail. WOW speedy customer service.

Ordered The All Power aircompressor #APC4016A on 11/09/2011 and received it eight days later.After reading other posts of the same compressor being delivered damaged,I dreaded seeing UPS drive up to my house knowing it most likely was damaged.I was literally shocked when two UPS employees carried it to the front of my garage undamaged.I thanked them and they waved back and drove off.Then I took the package inside and opened it up to find everything there as was stated on the box.I put oil in it and it started right up and broke itself in.I hit the jackpot with this compressor and could not be any happier with Amazon and UPS.I have never had to this date a bad experience with Amazon,they are top's in my book and will continue to order from them in the future.

Opened the box and found out a broken pump cover and a broken power switch box. Motor didn't start due to a cut capacitor wire. Fixed the capacitor wire and it started ok. Had to duck tape the power switch box and pump cover.

Missing a quick connect coupler in the fitting set.

Shouldn't even get 1 star. Well ok so I got in a week.

Compressor came broken and missing parts. The parts bag was included, however the parts were not put in it. The ziplock baggie was still sealed and hadn't been opened. They just tossed it in the box with the washers and nuts. Obviously I ended up losing a couple of washers. Luckily, I had a bunch and managed to get the wheels on.

However the biggest problem was that the plastic, electrical casing had been smashed to pieces. I inspected the electrical and determined it was locked in the on position and would not shut off on its own. You would have to unplug it to shut it off. While I was doing the inspection the glass top and O ring to the pressure gauge fell off. Quite comical by this point...lol. So I managed to get it going....and to my surprise the cheap ass plastic hose had multiple holes in it. What a piece of crap. If you gotta get one of these gems...go to the store and pick it up along with a hose. Never mind just look for another model. This one just sucks.

The air compressor did not work as expected. I put the oil in as suggested before running and ran it for 5 min. The motor started smoking and would not run after that. I would like to return it and go another way.

I've put in three whole house fans over the years. I installed this one a few days ago and am very pleased. I deviated from the instructions in two ways to reduce noise. First, I never follow the advice to put the fan in the middle of the house. I put it as far away from the master bedroom (no children) and around as many corners as possible. In this case, after finding I had an unusually tight-fitting garage door I put it in the ceiling of the garage. My door fits so tightly I can see no light around any edge, so the fan will produce a vacuum in the garage and pull through the door to the house if blocked open. That put it even farther from the MBR and around more corners than anywhere else in the house. Second, I stapled dark gray foam pipe insulation, the kind available in 6' lengths at HD or Lowe's, around the bottom and outside edge of the wooden fan frame. I cut one of the lengths of 1" insulation in half lengthwise and wrapped it over the bottom and up onto the side, maybe an inch, all around the base of the fan's frame. That prevented direct contact between the fan's box frame and any ceiling joist. I installed lumber between the joists under the frame and the fan sits on that (plus the teeny normal contact point on the center joist). I did not bolt the fan down (noise), but just put 1x4 lumber around the edge to keep it from going sideways. The 1x4 touched the foam also, on the sides. Since the fans pulls itself down as it pushes air up, floating the fan within the confines of the 1x4s around the edges holds it place nicely. With a separate 12-hour timer I can go to be with it running and it shuts off after things cool off. The fan is quiet enough that you can talk in a normal voice in the garage while it is running on high speed. By the way, it makes no difference where you install this thing as far as effectiveness goes. A vacuum in the house is a vacuum in the house. It will pull nicely from wherever you open a window or door. Installation took 5 1/2 hours plus about 1 1/2 for the timer because I had to fish an insulated wall and because I bought the wrong kind of electric box for the timer. If you use a timer, buy an electric box for "old work." It is made to install in the sheetrock, not to be nailed to a stud and will go much faster. Be sure to block open any door that can slam before you turn the fan on. Doors will slam shut HARD and maybe break something. I thought this fan might be too small, but it's not. When they tell you it's good for a 1500 sq ft house, it doesn't really mean anything. This house is considerably bigger than that. The size of fan has more to do with how many doors and windows you can open and still get enough air movement. With this one, you can get a very gentle breeze with one door plus one sliding glass door (we have no bugs). I really like my foam invention. This fan is noticeably quieter than my previous fans. You will need a helper to install the shutter. You can't hold it up and install a screw at the same time; at least I can't.

This is a really great Fan! After my $ rebate from my electric utility, I ended paying about $ for this item. I performed the installation in accordance with the instructions and this unit is very quiet, other than the whoose from the wind going up into my attic. To be truthful, I was fearing the noise but this unit makes less noise that my stove exhaust fan! I am a happy camper with this deal, when it switched on it produces a nice cool breeze inside my home. My advice is use the template that comes with the fan, take your time, and follow the simple installation guide.

I can hardly believe how effective this fan is. Our home is not an open floor-plan, so we used to struggle with getting airflow in different rooms. This whole house fan creates a nice breeze throughout the entire house (1800 sq ft). I installed this in the center hallway, and I can feel the air drafting through the furthest windows. Since you do not need to cut through ceiling joists, I was able to easily install this by myself. The most difficult part was ensuring that everything was centered before cutting through the sheetrock. I also wired this to a switch and left it on the high setting instead of using the pull chain. I work very slowly and methodically so it took me 6 hours to install, but an experienced handyman could do this in half the time. Throw away your window fans and invest in a whole house fan. You will be so happy that you did.

After many years of wanting an attic fan in my "new" home I finally bought and had this fan installed. The fan works great and is very quiet except the noise of the fan blades circulating the air zero or very little motor noise.

Only two complaints.

1. The sheet metal opening at the top of the fan had 4 random dents in it. If you look at the picture, the dents were on the raised rim that circles the top of the fan blade. The installers were wondering if I should send it back because it may have been knocked around in transit. I told them to test the fan motor and continue with the install if it worked since the dents were pretty much cosmetic and only visible from up in the attic when installed.

2. My other complaint is the cheap louvers/shutters, while they work well (open and close) with the fan being on or off, are very flimsy and make random rattling noise when the fan is on. This prevents me from turning the fan on at night on the timer and falling asleep I am a very light sleeper. I can sleep with the steady hum of the fan running but the random rattling comes and goes which drives me nuts as I try to sleep. Fortunately, the way I mostly will use the fan is to turn in on an hour or two before bed to cool the upstairs and then turn it off and go to bed.

I plan to look around and if I can find quality louvers that exactly fit this fan I'll buy and switch out in a NY minute.

Pro: the company: I thought there was a problem with the fan I received (it turns out there was not), so I called Attic Aire. they were extremely friendly and helpful people. Attic Aire gets an A+ for customer service. Actually, it was a desire to give them recognition for their terrific customer service which made me want to write this review in the first place.

Pro: I too mounted the fan on a thick piece of heavy wall insulation (bought from a big box store); there is very little vibration and the noise is not an issue, we don't notice it at all. I bought the 24 inch fan, perhaps the larger fan creates more vibration and noise.

Pro: we have used the fan almost every day, even when it's not hot, since I installed it: it maintains a gentle breeze and keeps the air inside the house very fresh (which can be a problem when your daughter has two house cats).

An installation idea: as mentioned, I bought the 24 inch fan; the fan comes assembled to a wooden frame; this frame is about 27 or 28 inches across. But the rafter the fan has to sit on are 16 inches apart on center (the distance across three rafters, then, is about 34 to 35 inches). So I cut 1/2 inch plywood about 36 x 36 inch square, then cut a square hole (about 25 inches across) in the center of the plywood so the fan would sit on top of the plywood without falling through. I had to cut the plywood in half in order to get it into the attic, but that did not create any problems. I then attached the heavy duty (fire-proof) insulation styrafoam to the rafters, mounted the plywood on that, then mounted the fan onto the plywood.

Another installation idea: I did almost all the work from inside the room where the fan was installed, staying out of the attic until the end: cut the hole in the ceiling, then through this hole secured pieces of 2x4's between the rafters, then mounted the insulation, then the plywood, then the fan, then attached electrical wires to the fan, then pushed the wire cable into the attic. it was only then that I turned off the power to the house and climbed into the attic to wire the fan to the house electrical system (I really don't enjoy crouching around and balancing between rafters in the attic -and needing that one tool left by mistake in the downstairs).

I removed the tire chuck and installed an air pipe extension and a quick disconnect at the end. Now it is used for filling tire, air blower, and occasional hobby air for operating air brushes. The most annoying problem is the paint. It painted with lead paint so I am required to wash my hand after use or wear gloves. I am planning on wrapping the handle with a duct tape so I don't have to touch it to move it around. The tank is welded well and feel safe. But the welding job at the handle and the leg isn't up to my standard. Over all I am pleased with the purchase.

I was looking for a rubber air hose when my poly one burst on me during a very cold spell. I was looking for a hose that would be flexible during the cold months (in Michigan that is about half of them). I went to a home store, but they didn't have any in stock that day, so I went to the web. The price was the same for a much better product that was made in the USA. I chose this one over the other one on Amazon, because many people claimed the cheaper price was a counter fit. It may have been the same, but I don't believe in companies (or certain countries) putting a good name on a cheap rip off.

I checked it out the day I got it and it was very flexible in the cold weather and seemed very sturdy.

Great product, durable, no leaks, has brass threads for a tight seal for couplings or stems. 10 year warranty a big plus. Not actually made by Goodyear, it's made by a second party under a licensing agreement. The price at Amazon was way lower than Auto Parts store pricing. I'm happy with this purchase.

Good connectors,sturdy construction,doesn't whip or kink easily. Using 2 in my shop and guys like them. Wish I could get longer ones. Have 3 total and some 25' and shorer lengths as well. I heard from rep that longer lengths are available and found the 100'. I will use those for permanent installs but the weight is too much on portable tool connections if you have too much hose.

I hang the hose from the roof 45 feet up too and think that's all the weight I want overhead. Very sturdy stuff, I ran over it with 1/2 ton pickup w. no problem...But...don't run over it with your forklift, not indestructible. Do make sure to be careful when adding or removing connectors as brass is soft by design. I just put one steel connector on both ends w. Teflon tape and leave it there. I also support the ends with nylon cord holding a little loop of slack where it connects to the air outlet. Not totally necessary but we pull on that end constantly while using tools so why put stress on the connectors when the hose will take it much better ?

Nuch higher quality than the old red or new China stuff ( leaks-like-sieve special ). Is there a bigger diameter w. stiffer jacket for use as heavy duty air plumbing ? Better than RapidAir or other "modular" systems ? I'd be interested.

It's doesn't feel and look like a cheaply, made in China junk. I'm looking forward to many years of problem-free usage of this product. I would always prefer products or tools made in USA for their durability and reliability, and most of all to keep the jobs here for all Americans.

Purchased a Performax 22-44 Plus from www.amazon.com a few months ago. Figured I'd post my experiences with the 22-44 and Amazon since I know I found these reviews very helpful when it came time to make my own decisions on what and where to buy.

Woodmaster, Delta, Grizzly, and Performax, seem to be the manufacturers most discussed when the topic of drum sanders came up.

The specific pros and cons have been discussed extensively in various newsgroups. Suggest a few Google searches using the appropriate key words to form your own opinion. In any case, I decided on the Performax 22-44 Plus based on the following (obviously, ymmv):

Grizzly: (+) good quality, (~) debatable performance, (+) affordable

Performax: (+) good quality, (+) good performance, (+) affordable

I wasn't able to try out any of these machines prior to purchase, so the above observations were based on my review of the various on-line threads and magazine reviews. Now that I've had a chance to use this thing a while here's some of my personal observations.

First off, there were quite a few comments about tripping/popping breakers if you weren't careful feeding material (the 22-44 draws up to 20 amps under load). I'm scratching my head on that one. I run my unit on a dedicated 15 amp breaker; sometimes on the same circuit as my 1 1/2 hp dust collector by accident. I've found the sandpaper begins burning/gouging the wood long before it'll pop a breaker. This end result is the same regardless of the grit (i.e., 36 to 220). I usually sand pieces 5 to 8 inches wide (mostly oak); however, I've fed a few glued boards 16 to 20 inches wide with the same results. I only tripped a breaker once when I inadvertently tried to feed some 3/4 inch material through the 22-44 with it set to 5/8. It tried to take off an 1/8 inch in one pass (1/32 is about max in one pass)--the drum came to a screeching halt when the breaker popped. Patience is the only game in town with the 22-44. From my experience (i.e., my feeding style), it takes 3 or 4 (sometimes more) passes at a given height before you can safely crank the height down a quarter-turn (1/64 inch) for subsequent passes. Rush and you'll burn/gouge the material and drastically reduce the life of the sandpaper (if not ruin it altogether). With belts running about $5 to $10 a pop (Klingspor is the best value IMHO; also OEM for Performax), it's an expensive mistake. Angling the material just slightly for each pass with an occasional straight feed greatly increases the effectiveness of the sanding. It reduces burning and increases the efficiency of the sanding process. Sanding depths less than 1/8" will cause the conveyor belt to rub the drum's sanding belt occasionally. The primary culprit are the distortions (deformities) to the conveyor belt resulting from sitting in one position too long (i.e., while in transit). I've sanded down to 1/16" without a backer board. The only consequence (to my knowledge) has been the occasional "smoothing" of the conveyor belt surface and slightly increased wear to my sanding belt.

A pleasant surprise with the 22-44 has been the consistency of the sanding depth (this is assuming you've properly set the left/right side drum height). I've found after sanding with 120 grit or higher, no detectable differance in height *anywhere* on the material (middle, corners, etc.). If you need precise thickness for several pieces, don't touch the depth handle (it may not be easily repeatable without a bit of trial & error sanding using your thickness guage). I assure you anything you final sand at that static setting will be same, exact thickness as the other pieces you sand at that same setting. Some users noted conveyor belt tracking problems. One minor adjustment during the first hour of use was all my 22-44 needed to track correctly.

Quality of construction and material ranges from excellent to outstanding. The machine itself is very quiet. However, the sanding process can get very noisy. Do *not* use the 22-44 without a dust collector--it's hard on the machine, sandpaper, and most importantly, your health. I decided against the purchase of Performax in/out feeder supports. Since they don't appear to be adjustable, it seemed moot. I've been very successful (zero snipe) using the same support devices one would use to safely, accurately cut a large item on your table saw or planer.

I had some issues with shipping damage which amazon.com and WMH Group (distributor for Jet, Performax, Powermatic, etc.) rectified satisfactorily. Fixes didn't happen overnight and required followup and patience. I got the feeling both companies genuinely care about their customers. However, they're just too big and cumbersome to give that hold-your-hand, it'll be ok in the morning response. If that's important to you consider buying locally.

One must realize that this will not take the place of a good planer none of these drum sanders are meant to remove a tremendous amount of material in one pass (however, I believe big belt sanders can eliminate need for a planer).

That being said, this product does a great job at sanding. The machine is well-made and very quiet. I have had no trouble whatsoever with the motor overheating or tripping my 25 amp circuit. I did need a conveyor belt replacement as mine had a "bubble" Performax sent me a new one within a few days. Their customer service is very good.

I was initially concerned about the cantilevered design. I read complaints regarding the Performax 16-32" flexing under load or pressure. I haven't experienced this at all. It will flex a little if you really push it but this doesn't happen under normal usage.

I would really suggest this product over the competition in this price range. If you have an extra grand lying around, Grizzly makes some excellent quality belt sanders that might be more useful for some folks. However, I find this sander totally meeting my needs and expectations and I have high demands of my woodworking tools.

Some important suggestions for those who are buying this product:

1) Align the drum head to the table. Ensure all bolts are tightened. This is a

product that needs to be properly set-up to work correctly!!!

2) Run the piece through several times and in different orientations for the intial

run. Don't take off more than a quarter-turn and run through twice at

each depth.

3) By an abrasive cleaning stick (~ $10). As soon as any dust loads the paper, clean

it off. This will help eliminate burns

4) Use the correct grit sandpaper for the job.

Overall, this is a great product that will give you uniform results. I highly recommend!!!

When this thing is tuned and working properly, it's a great machine. Alas, those moments are rare. I spend more time adjusting it than actually using it.

First, setting the sanding drum parallel to the table is a pain in the ass. The owner's manual says that parallelism is set at the factory and should not hafta be set by the owner. When I received mine, it was out by 3/8"! This is a huge amount. Obviously, the quality control department was at lunch when my machine was assembled.

To set the parallelism, four bolts are loosed and a knob is turned. The problem arises from the fact that there is so much play in these components, that by the time everything is re-tightened, it is out of parallel again. So, to set it is very much a hit-or-miss process.

Second, attaching the sandpaper belt to the drum is another pain in the ass. There are two clips that hold the sandpaper, one on either end. The first one is easy to set because it is on the outboard and you can see it and reach it. But the in-board clip cannot be seen. The clearance between the drum and the frame is really tight. Performax supplies a wire thingamajig to open the clip and keep the sandpaper taut. This works kinda. But if you have bear paws for hands, forget it.

Third, it's tough to keep the sandpaper taut. Pulling the sandpaper taut, working the thingamajig and pulling the tab into the clip is an exercise in frustration. Then the belts will stretch and need to be re-tightened. And the belts will always rise away from the drum by about 1 mm where they turn into clip. The clip is at 90 degrees to the drum, so, you could crease the sandpaper so it fits better but when you do that, it weakens the sandpaper and it will break. So, with this bump, you really don't have a full 22" because it doesn't sand correctly at the bump in the sandpaper. And forget trying to sand something 44" wide-I'd rather use 36 grit as toilet paper than sand a wide face frame.

Fourth, wood burns for no apparent reason. I get these areas, usually 3/8" wide where something attaches itself to the belt and boom, there is a band of pitch that is burned onto the sandpaper and will never come off. This pitch immediately starts gouging the wood. I use a dust collector rated at 1100 CFM and I clean the belt often with a crepe rubber stick. Also, whenever I sand something greater than 6" wide I increase the depth of cut only 1/8 of a revolution at a time (1/128"). I'll also do multiple passes at each depth. So, I've come to the conclusion that this is underpowered. (And no, there are no glue linescausing this.)

The automatic feed limiter doesn't solve this problem. In fact, if the feed limiter kicks in, at least 50% of the time, I'll get a wide swath of burn marks. So, I always feed so slow the feed limiter doesn't kick in.

Fifth, the belts break long before the abrasive is gone. And given the cost of these belts, it makes using this machine too expensive.

Now there are a few good things. The tracking of the conveyor belt is easy to set and it stays there. I've never had a problem with the flex in the cantilevered design. Snipe is an easily managed issue. And when it is perfectly adjusted, the belts are taut and new, it is a beautiful machine.

One reviewer mentioned that he never uses his planer anymore. I think this reviewer has spent way too much time in the finishing room without the exhaust fan turned on. Using this to true and square lumber would take 10X as long as a jointer/planer.

Another reviewer mentioned that this machine will leave a surface ready for staining/finish. Well, maybe, depending on the particular application. But one reason I got mine was to flatten doors after glue up. Because the rails run parallel to axis of the machine, the resulting sanding marks are perpendicular to the grain direction. Most people, myself included, find this objectionable.

In conclusion, unless you like fiddling with your machines more than you like working wood, stay away from this.

UPDATE A friend reccommended that I not use the crepe rubber to clean my belts. This has helped reduce burning a lot. So, I would now give this machine 3 stars and strongly reccommend that you do not use the crepe rubber pad sold by Griizly for cleaning drum sanders.

After much hemming and hawing between the deltaX5 and the Performax 22-44 Plus, I ultimately decided to bite the bullet and go for the big boy. I think the greatest factor influencing my decision was not cost but rather because of my gut feeling about it. Granted, I had not used either one prior, but just playing with them in the store made me feel the Performax was a better choice.

Capacity and cost aside, the Performax in my opinion is just plain better built. It has much heavier metal and the height adjustment is super smooth and precise. Compare that to the not-so-smooth 4-corner deal and lighter framework on the delta and I get a much better feel for the Performax. More to the point, the table height adjustment wheel on the delta is anything but smooth nor is it easy to turn not when compared side by side to the almost fluid-like motion of the Performax. That alone is rather critical to me because when you are making many multiple minor adjustments that only move the table 1/64th of an inch or so per pass, precision and an easy turning mechanism are critical.

As far as operation, assembly, and adjustments on the Performax, well they are amazingly simple. Everyone has heard the horror stories about getting the Delta set up correctly and maybe much of that is operator-related, but the Performax was pretty much ready to go right out of the box. I had only minor tweaks to make to the belt tension and drum arm and it was all quite painless. Mine came with these new belt-tracking guide thingies installed under the table that keeps the belt painlessly on track. Once it was up and running everything worked like a charm. I was quite amazed at the power of the conveyor. Don't worry about it bogging down it's not going to happen. Besides, the feed system is auto-regulating and automatically slows the feed down if it senses too deep a cut or too fast a feed. That is a great feature to stop burning and sniping because it basically lets you know when you messed up and you learn quickly how fast and how deep you can go.

Now, that's not to say you won't end up with snipe if you cut too deep but basically if you don't overdo it, it won't snipe. I actually had to really push it to make it snipe, but as long as you work with some common sense, snipe won't even be an issue. Besides, the feed rollers have tension adjustments, which is another big plus over the Delta. And as for noise, forget it. You can barely even tell its running.

Probably the greatest test for me was flipping a panel around and checking for a ridge line where the two passes meet. Even with the 80 grit that came with it, there was no ridge line. I was completely amazed. I'd imagine that with 120 or 150 grit you can pretty much almost be ready for staining with minimal if any finish sanding.

Ok, so the bottom line is this: If you are planning on using it as a planer, you probably won't be as happy as you would with a real planer. Although the machine is very capable of doing that with 36 or 60 grit, it's not designed to remove tons of material at a time and you are asking for problems with loading the drum and feed rates and all that. As far as using it as intended as a drum sander, it is quite the awesome machine. Plenty of power, solid construction, smooth adjustments and overall ease of use make this a great choice. Mine came with a closed stand with an interior shelf which is cool but even the open stand unit is still nice. Dust collection is mandatory. Heavy? yes. Expensive? Yes I guess so, but a wise man once said, "Buy quality cry once. Buy cheap cry every time you use it." I've not shed a tear since I bought it!!!

"Robusto" pretty much said it. The machine, like any, needs to be setup properly... do NOT bolt it together and assume factory settings to be spot-on.. they may very well be, but it's up to the end user to verify and adjust as neccessary.

Read the manual, good tips on developing "feel" for usage and how to adjust.

First runs of glued up panels went well, "ground 'em down" to 120 grit on the 22-44 and quickly finished 'em off with my ROS to final prefinishing stage.... still collecting sanding strips, perhaps going to 180/220 will eliminate the need for the ROS during pre-assembly sanding.

I don't expect this unit to replace my planers for sizing and "hogging" down the rough stuff, but it should suffice nicely for all flat sanding with minor touch up with ROS prior to final finishing.

Assembly went OK, the drum unit is a bit of a load (for this 'ole-man, at least) to get up on the stand, so a helper would be handy.

Plastic dust shroud is servicable, it would be nice however, if Jet would redesign the "latch" with less of an interior profile .... allowing more efficient air flow and less dust build up in the center of the drum ..... (my 2hp collector keeps the rest of the drum very clean)

Installing the sanding strips require some practice, but I've managed to swap 'em out in about the same time it takes me to change the blade in my table saw. The "Tuf tool" is an optional aid for the interior takeup fastner... I use my fingers to feel the location and pressure of the fastner.

Haven't needed to install the feed tables yet, so I can't speak to "concerns" of usability.....construction of same, however, is pretty much in-line with what I've seen used by other manufacturers with this type of accessory and price range. I did opt for less expensive/third party casters... they work just fine.

Finesse is the key operative.... not "git 'r dun"

Keep the unit maintained and "tuned"

Clean it up during and after usage.

It should last a long while.
